Job description
We are currently interviewing for Advanced Music Instructors for our Carlsbad and San Clemente locations. We are seeking Piano Instructors, Violin Instructors, Cello Instructors, and Instructors who can teach Voice while playing on the Guitar. Drum Instructors must also be able to play guitar or piano at an advanced level , as there is a low demand for drum lessons. Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Music (there are no exceptions) and be able to teach advanced adults.
Requirements:
· Applicants (especially pianists) must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from a 4 year accredited University or passed Advanced Level CM/RCM evaluations. Individuals who majored in a specialized degree of instrument concentration such as Piano Performance, Violin Performance, Guitar, Vocals etc. will have preference over general Music Majors.
· Applicants must be comfortable teaching students age 5 and up to advanced adults.
· Applicants must be able to demonstrate playing the entire piece that they are teaching to all levels of students.
· Applicants must be able to teach music theory to advanced adults.
· Applicants must be able to adapt quickly to change since families are allowed to share plans. As an example, an advanced piano mom may take her 6 year old's piano lesson at no notice to the teacher. A student cancellation may be filled with a trial lesson last minute, so the teacher must be able to take on last minute changes with confidence and ease.
· Applicant must be able to teach group lessons and be comfortable subbing for a group lesson last minute if needed. If you have an outgoing personality and love meeting new people - you would be an ideal candidate!
· Applicant must be open to teaching a variety of styles and genres. It is not necessary to be an expert in a genre like jazz. However, if you are a concert pianist it is important to be open to teaching your student how to play Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" if he/she wants to take a break from classical music for a season or vice versa.
· Applicants must be planning to remain in the area and commit to this position for at least a year or two (even better). It takes some time to build up a full schedule and we are not looking for high turnover.
· Applicant must be organized, reliable, punctual and be able to commit to teaching days. Please do not apply if you are planning on taking gigs during your teaching days (even if it pays more).
· Applicant must be an Effective Communicator with a positive and welcoming attitude. We are working together towards the goal of providing excellent music education to the community - young and old. Open communication fosters growth and positive change. We are seeking Instructors who can effectively facilitate communication with parents, staff and students.
· Applicants must be open to learning and growing with our community of amazing Instructors!
· Applicants must be able to lift at least 10 pounds of equipment to be able to help set up for events when needed , be able to walk up and down flights of stairs multiple times throughout the day to meet students in the lobby, be agreeable to help out with administrative tasks such as helping set up for recitals and organizing teaching rooms.

Our Competitive Edge
1. A CONSTANT FLOW OF NEW STUDENTS TO KEEP SCHEDULES AS FULL AS POSSIBLE
Although teachers do their best to retain students, over the course of the year students can move or quit. This can leave a teacher with gaps or holes in their schedule. At our schools, we invest in our teachers by spending advertising dollars and marketing year-round in order to keep our teachers’ schedules as full as possible. We carefully research reasons for student drops and do our best to help in retention. Although we provide assistance in retention, it is ultimately the instructor's responsibility to retain the student. Our school can't force students to stay and for this reason we are unable to guarantee teaching shifts. Our students know that we care why they are leaving. We are continually registering new students for our private music lessons even during typically slower registration months like June and July.
Unlike internet referral services, it is in our best interest to keep your schedule full. Other companies want as many teachers in as many places as possible. They don’t care if you only have 2 students. We have to pay for our studio space and it takes time and money to hire instructors. Therefore, we want you to have a full schedule and succeed as a music teacher! It is far easier to support one teacher with a full schedule than it is to support 15 teachers with a couple students each.
2. EXTRAS ARE TAKEN CARE OF – YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITY IS TO TEACH AND RETAIN STUDENTS, PROVIDE LESSON FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS AT EVERY LESSON, AND SIGN UP/COACH STUDENTS FOR RECITALS
Our organized and friendly administrative and management staff handle all policy enforcement and lesson scheduling. They are there to help out with recital signups and details. This means that the teacher is free to focus on teaching and not get bogged down by handling awkward situations in regard to tuition collection or scheduling. Driving all over town for a couple lessons, paying for high gas rates, trying to remember who is months behind on tuition, protecting your time against student cancellations with no pay - these are all problems of the past. Teachers are NOT required to attend the quarterly Performance Workshops and quarterly Recitals. Our staff facilitates all 8 annual events for you - and provides a complimentary video for you and the client to watch so that you are part of the entire process!
3. ENVIRONMENT & RESOURCES FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Roos Studios is one of those rare places that actually has a vision statement which they live by and make decisions by every day. Our vision is all about growth and excellence, as we believe in fostering an environment of growth for everyone, teachers included. Whether you have only taught a handful of students or have been teaching for a long time, we believe that you can still grow and refine your skills at our music school. We have an abundance of resources and work together as a team to uphold and continually raise Roos Studios’ reputation of excellence to exceed beyond what it is today.
While we welcome all beginning students to our school, we don’t want to simply be a revolving door for them, but rather to create an environment of long-term growth where they progress for years. Providing free quarterly Performance Workshops and quarterly Recitals help with retention and sets us apart from the competition - making Roos Studios the premiere choice for music lessons!
4. CONVENIENCE OF AN ON-SITE BOOKSTORE
Each of our locations has an on-site bookstore with over 100 titles of music books and fun titles like - Best of Coldplay, Disney Beginner Piano, Imagine Dragons Easy Piano, Faber Piano Adventures Method books and more. No more having to send links, deal with orders and delivery hassles. Your students can follow a classical curriculum by Henle Verlag, Schirmer publishing, Suzuki etc. or browse through our fun selections of Pop Chart Hits of 2022-2023, 2023-2024 and more. They can get inspired by the collection of Broadway Musicals compilations, Sound of Music Song Collections, Harry Styles Songs on Piano, Adele, ands more! Our front desk staff will assist you in all customer purchases. Students can grab a book on the spot and start learning their favorite song asap! We offer a 10% discount to all Students, and 15% to Charter Semester Program Students.
5. OUR TEACHERS ARE EMPLOYEES - EVEN PART-TIMERS CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE MATCHING 401(k) RETIREMENT PROGRAM
Most music schools or stores hire Teachers as independent contractors to come and go. At Roos Studios, our teachers are part of our Family! Even if they only teach one day with us, they are still classified as an employee. This provides many benefits in the case of seeking a car loan, home mortgage, or other applications which look more favorably upon a consistent employee job as opposed to a contractor position. Employee jobs are sometimes hard to come by for professional musicians, so we are proud to offer this benefit! Our teachers are conveniently and consistently paid via direct deposit every two weeks.
6. YOUR TIME IS RESPECTED AND YOU ARE PAID WHEN STUDENTS CANCEL LATE
Our teachers are still paid for same day cancellations. They are not paid for openings, such as when students provide a 24-hour notice. But even when they DO provide a 24-hour notice, we do our best to book a make-up lesson in that spot so that you have no gaps and are still paid. If that doesn't happen, you are able to hang out in your teaching room during that time and take a quick breather or relax in either of comfortable break rooms at both locations. In the case of a late cancellation, when students cancel right before a lesson starts (outside of the cancellation window), the teacher is still paid teaching rate for that lesson time. All students are given an option to zoom through our nifty system as an alternative to coming in. If they can't come in, the teacher is expected to send over a video assignment through our nifty student portal system during the first half of the missed lesson time - all the while being paid at full teacher rate. The teacher must be agreeable to completing administrative tasks during the remainder of the paid lesson. Unlike Private teachers that have to have the uncomfortable conversation with the parent about cancellation policies - at ROOS our administration team handles and enforces all customer communication regarding polices while you never forfeit pay.
7. NO HAVING TO COME IN FOR EXTRA MAKEUP LESSONS
Make-ups generally occur within your regular teaching schedule . This means - no makeups on random days and times. Students sign up for makeup lessons over other students’ absences. This means when one of your students is absent, we turn that lesson time into an available make-up time for another student (which can be another Teacher's student). Your student also has the option to book a makeup with another teacher in the studio. The system is flexible for our students and families and means you never have to worry about setting time outside of your general regular schedule for make-ups, or teaching an unpaid make-up lesson. We like to work as a team here at ROOS!
8. STUDENT PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
All Performance Opportunities are completely organized and run by Roos Staff. At this time, they are offered 8 times per year at our in-house Recital Hall in Carlsbad that hosts a full stage, sound system and 9ft Yamaha CF Concert Grand Piano. Our team takes care of all logistics from helping you sign your students sign up, assisting teachers in loading backing tracks, and booking times via our automated recital signup software. We make sure that all details are set in place - such as whether a mic or guitar plug-in is needed. We offer a casual Performance Workshop a few weeks before each formal Recital to run Sound Check, build up confidence and ensure the best performance for each student. Students are allowed to sign up for the Performance Workshop only and not do the Recital. Teachers are provided videos of each participating student rehearsal and recital performance - so teacher attendance at events is not necessary but encouraged.
9. ALWAYS KNOW YOUR SCHEDULE WITH OUR ONLINE SCHEDULING SYSTEM
Access your current LIVE schedule, absences, make-ups, etc. online through your teacher portal at all times. Our scheduling software is incredibly easy to navigate and allows teachers to always be kept up to date on their students and see their schedule from home or on-the-go. Plus, every time a student enrolls, drops or changes their schedule, your online schedule will be automatically updated real-time. It is great practice to refresh your schedule throughout the day to be up-to-date on any last-minute changes.
9. PARENT COMMUNICATION IS EASY THROUGH OUR STUDENT PORTAL
At ROOS, teacher privacy is high priority. Our teachers only communicate with students during work shifts and only through the student scheduling portal. This means - no texts over the weekends from parents asking about their kids' assignments, asking why their kids aren't practicing, or when the next recital is. We try to make our teachers' jobs easy and provide the support you need.
